Exams and STD Testing
Annual Exam - Yearly exam consisting of a breast exam, internal and external exam of the vagina, and an examination of the other reproductive organs. This is normally given in conjunction with a pap smear. A birth control consultation and prescription can also be included.
Pelvic Exam - An examination of your internal organs: uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. The doctor or nurse practitioner will check for any abnormalities by inserting two fingers into your vagina while applying pressure to your abdomen to physically examine these reproductive organs.
Breast Exam - An examination of the breast tissue to check for any abnormalities. The doctor or nurse practitioner will physically examine your breast tissue by applying pressure in a circular pattern over each breast and into the armpit areas to feel for any lumps or other irregularities in the breast tissue. You will also be given the opportunity to learn how to perform a breast self-exam.
Pap Smear - Safe, simple, quick procedure consists of collecting a sample of cells from the cervix and examining for any abnormalities. The doctor or nurse practitioner will gather the sample by opening the walls of the vagina with a speculum and, using a small brush/spatula, brushing cells from the surface of the cervix. You should have a Pap smear at least once a year as early-detection screening for cervical cancer.
Sexually Transmitted Disease Testing - We offer a wide range of STD screening including Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Syphilis, HPV (genital warts), HSV (herpes) and HIV tests to women and men. In our Pennsylvania offices, these services are available for free through a state-sponsored program. We also offer treatment or referrals for treatment to all patients who have positive results.

Condoms - Condoms are available for free to all patients.
Emergency Contraception (The Morning-After Pill) - This consists of medication taken up to 5 days after unprotected intercourse (preferably within 72 hours). This has been proven to reduce the risk of pregnancy up to 89% of the time.
Oral Contraception - We offer a wide variety of birth control pills. We will discuss with you which of the many pills on the market might be right for you.

Diaphragm - A diaphragm is a latex barrier that is a soft, shallow dome that covers the cervix. It is used in conjunction with spermicidal jelly, foam, or cream. A physician or nurse practitioner will fit you for the right sized diaphragm.
Mirena® Intrauterine System (IUS) - The IUS is a long-term form of contraception consisting of a small device that is inserted in the uterus. It releases hormones directly onto the endometrium to prevent pregnancy and reduce menstrual bleeding for up to five years.
Paraguard® Intrauterine Device (IUD) - The IUD is a long-term form of contraception consisting of a small copper device that is inserted in the uterus. It contains no hormones and it can be left in place for more than ten years.
Essure® Tubal Occlusion - Essure causes permanent infertility by closing off the fallopian tubes. Essure placed hysteroscopically in our office and requires no incisions or general anesthesia.
Abortion Services
Non-Surgical Abortion - The non-surgical abortion procedure offers patients an alternative to surgical abortion early in their pregnancy. Non-surgical abortions are safer than surgical abortions; many women find them gentler and feel they are a more "natural" option.
We offer two methods of non-surgical abortion: Methotrexate/Misoprostol and (RU-486) Mifepristone/Misoprostol
Early Surgical Abortion - Early Surgical abortion between 6-14 weeks:
Surgical abortions done in the first trimester are safe, quick, and highly effective. A dilation and aspiration curettage procedure will be performed early in pregnancy to empty your uterus. The procedure takes only a couple of minutes to complete and afterwards you will relax in our monitored recovery area for approximately one hour. You will return to the office for your follow-up appointment two weeks after your abortion to make sure that the procedure was successful and that you are healing well.
2nd Trimester Abortion - Surgical abortion between 14-24 weeks:
If you are between 14 and 24 weeks pregnant, your procedure will take two to three days to complete. You will have all necessary labwork, ultrasound, paperwork, counseling and exam on the first appointment day. The first part of the procedure will include the doctor's examination, manual dilation of the cervix and insertion of laminaria- a sterile material made of a spongy type of seaweed that expands by soaking up fluid from the cervix. This allows for a more gentle, wider and more natural dilation of the cervix than other methods. This process can take one to two days depending on gestation and the individual woman. You will have an appointment to come in to the office each day until the procedure is complete, so that your dilation can be monitered. |
